Delta Variant ‘Explodes’ into Bexar County, Now Accounts for Most COVID Cases

During a coronavirus pandemic briefing on Friday, July 23, Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced that hospitalizations in San Antonio are now at 418 — and more than 95 percent of those patients are unvaccinated.

The positivity rate has also jumped from 11.2 percent to 13.8, with a 7-day average of new cases being 363. More than 83 percent of the positive cases in Bexar County trace back to the highly contagious delta variant.

Nirenberg urges the 38 percent of residents who are unvaccinated to stop listening to misinformation and get the vaccine as soon as possible.

“The delta variant continues to spread and the unvaccinated are the most vulnerable,” Nirenberg said during the press conference. “Vaccinations remain the essential factor to put us in better shape than we were a year ago. If you are unvaccinated, forget the disinformation that you hear out there. You are at great risk of severe illness. People who are vaccinated are still contracting COVID-19 but the vast majorities of those cases are mild and do not require hospitalization.” For more details, visit this My San Antonio article.
